Collapsed Sewer Line: Causes & Expert Solutions

February 17, 2025

Plumbing problems, such as a collapsed sewer line, aren’t exactly the kind of thing you want to spend your weekend thinking about. In fact, no one wants to deal with them.

A collapsed sewer pipe is a serious issue that can turn your home or business into a disaster zone. The sooner you catch the warning signs, the better chance you have of avoiding a costly (and messy) emergency situation.

So, learn what causes a sewer line to collapse, how to tell if yours is in trouble and what can be done to fix it before things get out of hand.

What’s a Collapsed Sewer Line?

A sewer line collapses when the pipe that carries wastewater from your home to the main sewer system caves in or breaks apart. This is not just a minor plumbing issue and can lead to serious blockages, overflows and potential damage to your property.

When a sewer collapses, waste has nowhere to go and this is what causes slow drains, foul smells and in the worst cases, wastewater backing up into your home. Unpleasant, right? Well, it’s not just that, it also poses a serious health hazard and weakens your property’s foundation.

Possible Causes of a Collapsed Sewer Pipe

Several factors can lead to a collapsed sewer line. Understanding these causes can help you take preventive measures before disaster strikes.

Misaligned Pipes

In the long run, ground movement can cause sewer pipes to shift. When this happens, the joints between pipes can separate. This is especially common in areas with unstable soil.

Improper Installation and Poor Workmanship

A sewer system is only as good as the way it’s installed. If the plumbing work was rushed or done incorrectly, it could lead to problems down the track. Weak joints, poor pipe placement and low-quality materials all increase the chances of an early failure.

Foreign Matter

Sewer lines are designed to handle water and waste, but when other materials get into the system, trouble follows. All of these can cause blockages, putting extra pressure on the pipes and leading to cracks or collapses:

  • Grease buildup from cooking oils and fats
  • Wet or “flushable” wipes, hygiene products and paper towels
  • Tree roots

Natural Movement of the Ground

The ground is constantly shifting due to weather changes, moisture levels and geological activity. Over time, this movement can put stress on underground pipes, causing them to break or collapse.

External Forces

Pipes buried under driveways, roads or near construction sites face extra risks. Heavy vehicles passing over weak pipes can cause them to crack and nearby excavation work can disturb the ground.

Ageing Pipes

Older homes often have sewer lines made from clay, cast iron or asbestos cement. Over time, these pipes become brittle and more prone to cracking or collapsing.

Signs of a Collapsed Sewer Line

Here are some red flags that your sewer line might be failing:

Wet Patches in Your Yard

If you notice soggy or sunken spots in your garden, it could mean sewage is leaking underground and wastewater seeping into the soil.

Slow Draining Sinks

A slow drain could signal a bigger issue in your sewer line. If multiple drains in your home are showing signs of slow drains, the problem is likely deeper in the system.

Toilet Not Flushing Properly

Frequent clogs, weak flushes or gurgling sounds from the toilet can indicate a major blockage or pipe collapse.

Unpleasant Smell from Drains

A strong sewage odour coming from your drains is a clear sign something isn’t right. If waste can’t flow freely, gases build up and make their way back into your home.

Gurgling Sounds from the Sink

If you hear strange noises coming from your drains when running water, it could mean there’s air trapped in the pipes. This often happens when there’s a major blockage or collapse.

Soil Sinking/Settling in the Yard

If you notice dips or sinking spots in your lawn, it could mean an underground pipe has failed.

What Are the Possible Dangers of a Sewer Collapse?

Ignoring a collapsed sewer pipe can lead to major consequences, including:

Health Hazards

Raw sewage backing up into your home can expose you to harmful bacteria and toxins.

Structural Damage

Leaking wastewater can weaken your home’s foundation and may lead to costly repairs.

Expensive Emergency Fixes

If the problem isn’t addressed early, you might face emergency excavation and pipe replacement.

Environmental Contamination

A broken sewer line can leak untreated waste into nearby water sources, which can result in potential legal and environmental issues.

Effective Solutions for a Collapsed Sewer Pipe

If your sewer collapses, a quick solution is a must to minimise damage. Here’s what you can do to fix a sewer line issue:

Knowledge

Recognise the warning signs and act fast. A small issue can quickly turn into a disaster if left unchecked.

Professional Intervention

A collapsed sewer line isn’t a DIY fix. Licensed plumbers have the expertise and equipment to diagnose the problem and carry out repairs properly. Solutions may include:

  • Pipe relining: Inserting a new lining inside the damaged pipe to restore its function without digging up the entire area.
  • Pipe replacement: In severe cases, the broken pipe will need to be replaced with new, durable materials.
  • Hydro jetting: High-pressure water blasting to remove blockages and clear the line before repairs.

Regular Maintenance

Keeping your sewer system clean and free from blockages can prevent future collapses. Regular drain cleaning, inspections and avoiding non-biodegradable waste in your drains can extend the life of your pipes.

When Holly in Warriewood on Sydney’s Northern Beaches engaged Eze-Flow to address ongoing drainage issues around her property, the backyard had been experiencing constant water pooling and flooding in the backyard during heavy rain. Holly initially described the issue as a “very wet portion of the backyard”, suspecting additional aggy lines may be required. With new paving planned, there were concerns that without proper drainage, heavy rainfall would result in water flowing back toward the house. It was clear the existing stormwater system was not coping and required upgrading before any surface works could proceed. The works were completed in two stages across November 2025 and March 2026, delivering a complete drainage solution across the property.

When a Primary School in Forestville began experiencing extensive stormwater blockages and localised flooding in May 2025, the issue was initially believed to be a simple blockage. Eze-Flow was called in to clear the stormwater system , however after attending site and beginning high-pressure water jetting to clear the multiple lines, it quickly became clear the problem was more complex. Grates were removed from multiple stormwater pits and heavy debris was manually cleared, including built-up soil, tree roots, and rubbish. One of the main pits was completely filled with compacted soil and roots, requiring excavation by hand before the outlet could be cleared. Using high-pressure jetting and CCTV drain inspections, we attempted to cleared both upstream and downstream. During this process, a significant amount of debris was removed, including food wrappers, chip packets, and multiple balls lodged throughout the pipeline. After approximately two hours of continuous jetting, two sections were identified as requiring excavation and repair. CCTV inspection confirmed a collapsed section of pipe, while another section was found to be obstructed by a foreign pipe that had been incorrectly installed into the stormwater line.
