What Causes a Smelly Bathroom Drain?

June 18, 2024

There are few things more unpleasant than walking into a bathroom only to be hit with a foul odour coming from the bathroom drain. The stench not only causes discomfort but can also be embarrassing, especially when guests are around. Moreover, the smell may linger and spread throughout the entire house. This makes dealing with a smelly bathroom drain a frustrating task.

Understanding the underlying causes and implementing effective solutions can help alleviate this inconvenience. In this blog, we'll take a look into the causes of smelly bathroom drains and explore expert tips to tackle this unpleasant issue head-on.

Possible Causes of a Smelly Bathroom Floor Drain

Identifying the specific cause of the smelly floor drain in the bathroom is needed for implementing an effective solution to eliminate the smell and restore freshness to your bathroom. Some of the potential culprits behind the unpleasant odour coming from your bathroom drain include:

Malfunctioning Vent Pipe

A malfunctioning vent pipe can lead to inadequate ventilation in a plumbing system This causes air pressure imbalances that prevent proper drainage in the bathroom floor drain and result in sewer gas backup and bathroom floor drain odour.

Worn Out Pipes

Old and deteriorated pipes may develop leaks permitting sewage gases to escape and result in a smelly bathroom floor drain. Additionally, the deterioration of the pipes can foster stagnant water accumulation that provides a favourable environment for bacteria to breed and worsen the foul odour.

Blockage

One of the most common causes of a smelly bathroom drain is a blockage. When debris, hair, soap scum, and other substances accumulate in the drain pipe, it creates a drain blockage that restricts the flow of water. This stagnant water becomes a breeding ground for bacteria which leads to foul odours.

Infrequent Use of Sink/Shower Allowing Stagnant Water

If a bathroom sink or shower is not used regularly, water and organic buildup can become stagnant in the drain pipes. This stagnant water and buildup provide an ideal environment for bacteria to thrive and give off a foul smell.

Organic Buildup Within the Drain Pipes

Over time, organic matter such as particles, oils, and hair can accumulate inside the drain pipes. As this organic material decomposes, it produces unpleasant odours that can come back up through the drain and into the bathroom.

Potential Sewer Line Issues

In some cases, a smelly bathroom drain could indicate more significant problems with the sewer line. Cracks, leaks, or blockages in the sewer line can cause sewage to back up into the drain pipes. Sewer leaks caused by damaged or improperly installed plumbing vents can also contribute to unpleasant smells in the bathroom.

When Holly in Warriewood on Sydney’s Northern Beaches engaged Eze-Flow to address ongoing drainage issues around her property, the backyard had been experiencing constant water pooling and flooding in the backyard during heavy rain. Holly initially described the issue as a “very wet portion of the backyard”, suspecting additional aggy lines may be required. With new paving planned, there were concerns that without proper drainage, heavy rainfall would result in water flowing back toward the house. It was clear the existing stormwater system was not coping and required upgrading before any surface works could proceed. The works were completed in two stages across November 2025 and March 2026, delivering a complete drainage solution across the property.

When a Primary School in Forestville began experiencing extensive stormwater blockages and localised flooding in May 2025, the issue was initially believed to be a simple blockage. Eze-Flow was called in to clear the stormwater system , however after attending site and beginning high-pressure water jetting to clear the multiple lines, it quickly became clear the problem was more complex. Grates were removed from multiple stormwater pits and heavy debris was manually cleared, including built-up soil, tree roots, and rubbish. One of the main pits was completely filled with compacted soil and roots, requiring excavation by hand before the outlet could be cleared. Using high-pressure jetting and CCTV drain inspections, we attempted to cleared both upstream and downstream. During this process, a significant amount of debris was removed, including food wrappers, chip packets, and multiple balls lodged throughout the pipeline. After approximately two hours of continuous jetting, two sections were identified as requiring excavation and repair. CCTV inspection confirmed a collapsed section of pipe, while another section was found to be obstructed by a foreign pipe that had been incorrectly installed into the stormwater line.
