Plumbing Licence Check: Does Your Plumber Have One?

February 22, 2021

This is how you check your Northern Beaches plumber is licensed

You may be able to call the average unlicensed handyman to carry out some repairs around your Northern Beaches property, but when it comes to plumber, it’s a very different story.

NSW Fair Trading mandate the need for a licence before you can do any plumbing, draining or gas fitting (including LP gas fitting) work in NSW, regardless of the cost of the work and regardless of whether the work is residential, commercial or industrial.

Fortunately, it’s easy to know what you can and can’t do and even easier to check whether your Northern Beaches plumber is legally qualified to do the work.

How to check a plumber’s licence

Whenever you use a tradesperson like a plumber to work around your home, it’s always a good idea to check that they are
current with their contractor licence.

First, you will need to fire up your favourite internet browser to visit: https://www.onegov.nsw.gov.au/publicregister/#/publicregister/search/Trades

On this page, you will see that all you need to check your local Northern Beaches plumber licence is one or a combination of the following:

  • Name of plumber (personal and/or company name)
  • Licence number
  • Suburb
  • Trade (which in this case is a plumber)

Australian Business Number (ABN) or Australian Company Number (ACN) Enter your information into the search bar towards the top of the page and click on the magnifying glass to the right. From there, you will be taken to a new page that features all the information you need to know about your plumber. A green tick next to the name shows their licence to be current, but you need a little more information.

Clicking on the plumber’s name will take you to another page with more details about licensing and qualifications. Your plumber’s qualifications are important because you don’t want anyone working on your gas line who doesn’t possess the necessary training. This page will tell what your plumber, Northern Beaches service can do, including:

  • Standard plumbing
  • Roof plumbing
  • Drainer
  • LP Gasfitter
  • Gasfitter

Now that you know your Northern Beaches plumber has all the necessary training, and their license is up to date, you still might want to know a little bit more about them.

You should also make sure to check that their insurance is current. Fortunately, accidents are rare, but it’s always good to have insurance as a backup, especially for big jobs.

Knowing a plumber’s reputation will also help to ensure you are only working with a professional service. In this case, a quick Google search for their business name should bring up reviews. Make sure you read all the reviews, even the negative ones because that is the best way to get the full story.

When Holly in Warriewood on Sydney’s Northern Beaches engaged Eze-Flow to address ongoing drainage issues around her property, the backyard had been experiencing constant water pooling and flooding in the backyard during heavy rain. Holly initially described the issue as a “very wet portion of the backyard”, suspecting additional aggy lines may be required. With new paving planned, there were concerns that without proper drainage, heavy rainfall would result in water flowing back toward the house. It was clear the existing stormwater system was not coping and required upgrading before any surface works could proceed. The works were completed in two stages across November 2025 and March 2026, delivering a complete drainage solution across the property.
