Cleaning the Drain: Expert Tips from Eze-Flow Plumbing

February 14, 2025

Drains are essential in homes and businesses by directing away wastewater and keeping spaces clean and dry. However, over time, they can accumulate debris, grease and other materials that block their proper functioning. Knowing the effective ways of cleaning the drain is key to preventing issues such as foul odours, blockages and costly repairs.

In this blog post, we’ll cover practical tips for cleaning the drains effectively, as well as the importance of regular drain maintenance

Cleaning the Drain: What It Entails

When we talk about cleaning drains, we refer to the process of clearing blockages and removing buildup that can affect the efficiency of your plumbing system. Regular drain cleaning helps remove any debris that has accumulated over time and ensures that water flows smoothly through the pipes.

Keeping drains clean prevents the risk of expensive plumbing issues for homeowners. For businesses, it ensures that the plumbing system continues to operate without disruptions that could affect day-to-day operations. Routine maintenance also provides peace of mind, knowing that your plumbing system is functioning properly.

The Importance of Cleaning the Drains

Cleaning the drains regularly comes with numerous benefits that go beyond just preventing nasty blockages. Here’s why it’s so important to maintain your drains:

1. Prevents Blockages

Cleaning the drain reduces the risk of blockages, which can be both inconvenient and costly. Over time, debris like hair, soap, food particles and grease can accumulate, eventually leading to clogs. Cleaning your drains prevents these buildups, saving you from the hassle of calling in an emergency plumber.

2. Eliminates Foul Odours

Blocked or dirty drains often produce unpleasant smells due to the accumulation of organic matter. By cleaning your drains regularly, you can prevent these odours from spreading throughout your home or business.

3. Improves Drainage Efficiency

When your drains are clean, water flows freely and efficiently. Blockages can slow down the flow of water, which leads to standing water in sinks, tubs and showers. A clean drain ensures that water drains quickly and freely, preventing any unpleasant flooding or water damage.

4. Extends the Life of Plumbing Systems

Drains that are regularly cleaned and maintained last longer. Build-up and debris can corrode pipes, which can cause leaks and other structural issues. Regularly cleaning the drain helps prevent this kind of wear and tear and ensures your plumbing system components will last for years.

5. Prevents Pest Infestations

Pipes that are blocked with organic matter or food waste become attractive to pests like ants, cockroaches and rodents. Keeping your drains clean reduces the likelihood of pest infestations in your home or business.

6. Reduces Health Risks

Dirty drains can harbour harmful bacteria, mould and mildew, all of which pose health risks. Regular drain cleaning helps remove these contaminants for a healthier living or working environment.

7. Saves Money on Repairs

As the old saying goes, an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. By maintaining clean drains and addressing minor issues before they escalate, you can avoid expensive plumbing repairs or emergency service calls.

8. Improves Home or Business Value

A well-maintained plumbing system adds value to a home or business. Potential buyers and tenants will appreciate the state of the plumbing, which could make your property more attractive on the market whenever you consider selling your property.

How to Clean the Drain: Tips and Tricks

Now that we’ve established why it's so important to clean the drain, let’s take a look at some effective methods you can use to keep your plumbing in good condition.

A. Remove Potential Clogs

One of the first steps to cleaning your drains is addressing any visible blockages. A plunger is an easy and effective tool for clearing minor clogs in sinks, showers or toilets. For more stubborn clogs, you may need to call in a professional plumber.

B. Use Baking Soda and Vinegar

A natural and chemical-free option to clean the drain is using baking soda and vinegar. Letting the mixture sit for about 15 minutes, then flushing the drain with hot water helps break down grease and other debris.

C. Pour Hot Water Down the Drain Weekly

Pouring hot water down your drains once a week helps dissolve grease, soap and other substances that can build up over time. Simply boil a kettle of water and pour it slowly down the drain.

D. Professional Cleaning and Maintenance

While DIY methods can be effective for minor cleaning, there are times when professional help is needed. For thorough cleaning and long-term maintenance, it’s important to schedule regular inspections with a professional plumber. Plumbers often use specialised equipment, like hydrojetting and SeeSnakes, to diagnose and remove drain issues and ensure that your pipes are in optimal condition.

When Holly in Warriewood on Sydney’s Northern Beaches engaged Eze-Flow to address ongoing drainage issues around her property, the backyard had been experiencing constant water pooling and flooding in the backyard during heavy rain. Holly initially described the issue as a “very wet portion of the backyard”, suspecting additional aggy lines may be required. With new paving planned, there were concerns that without proper drainage, heavy rainfall would result in water flowing back toward the house. It was clear the existing stormwater system was not coping and required upgrading before any surface works could proceed. The works were completed in two stages across November 2025 and March 2026, delivering a complete drainage solution across the property.

When a Primary School in Forestville began experiencing extensive stormwater blockages and localised flooding in May 2025, the issue was initially believed to be a simple blockage. Eze-Flow was called in to clear the stormwater system , however after attending site and beginning high-pressure water jetting to clear the multiple lines, it quickly became clear the problem was more complex. Grates were removed from multiple stormwater pits and heavy debris was manually cleared, including built-up soil, tree roots, and rubbish. One of the main pits was completely filled with compacted soil and roots, requiring excavation by hand before the outlet could be cleared. Using high-pressure jetting and CCTV drain inspections, we attempted to cleared both upstream and downstream. During this process, a significant amount of debris was removed, including food wrappers, chip packets, and multiple balls lodged throughout the pipeline. After approximately two hours of continuous jetting, two sections were identified as requiring excavation and repair. CCTV inspection confirmed a collapsed section of pipe, while another section was found to be obstructed by a foreign pipe that had been incorrectly installed into the stormwater line.
