When to call a Hot Water Plumber

Common hot water problems

Winter isn’t exactly the best time for your hot water system to go on the blink. As a plumber, Northern Beaches service provider, I’ve had more than my fair share of frantic calls from people worried about cold showers in the middle of winter because their hot water supply isn’t as reliable as it should be. Sometimes, a little maintenance is all that’s required, but here are a few tell-tale signs it might be time to give your local plumber a call.

Is the power still on?

Hot water systems have their own fuse or circuit breaker, so the power board should be the first place you look if you suddenly have nothing but cold water out of the taps. Even if you can still turn on the lights and the stove, your hot water system may still be without power. Also, make sure you check that the water connection is working before you turn it back on. An empty hot water system could burn out the heating element.

Defective thermostats

Thermostats control when the heating elements heat up and turn off, as well as monitor the temperature of the water. Two thermostats are controlling the temperature of your hot water system, and if either of them is faulty, you can be on the receiving end of water that is either too cold or too hot.

The hot water system is leaking

Hot water systems have a release valve to reduce the pressure inside the tank. It’s common to have a small amount of moisture around the tank because of the release valve, but if you notice excessive levels of water around the tank, your local plumber will need to check it for leaks.

Old age

Hot water systems work hard day in and day out. Eventually, they wear out and need replacement. If your hot water system is ten years or older, it may be starting to show signs of decreased performance. In old systems, parts are often no longer available, or the repair can cost more than a completely new tank. Call your plumber, Northern Beaches service who can advise you on the best course of action.
