The Top 8 Blocked Toilet Causes and Expert Solutions to Fix Them

August 7, 2024

We’ve all been in a situation where you flush the toilet, only to watch in dismay as the water rises instead of swirling away. The inconvenience and frustration of a blocked toilet can ultimately disrupt your day and leave you scrambling for a solution. However, it is important to understand what causes blocked toilets to know how to address them effectively.

In this blog, we'll explore the top eight common causes of blocked toilets and provide expert solutions to help you tackle these blockages efficiently.

What Causes Blocked Toilets

Blocked toilets can be caused by a variety of factors and understanding these causes can help in both preventing and addressing blockages effectively. Here are eight common blocked toilet causes:

1. Excessive Toilet Paper Use

One of the most common causes of blocked toilets is the overuse of toilet paper. While toilet paper is designed to dissolve in water, using too much at once can overwhelm the plumbing system which can lead to clogs.

2. Flushing Non-Flushable Items

Wet wipes, sanitary products, cotton balls, and even dental floss are often mistakenly flushed down the toilet. Flushing non-flushable items that do not break down easily can cause significant blockages. Always dispose of such items in the trash rather than the toilet.

3. Build-Up of Waste Materials

Over time, waste materials can accumulate in the pipes, leading to a gradual buildup that eventually causes a blockage. This is particularly common in households with multiple occupants or in toilets that receive heavy use.

4. Structural Issues in the Plumbing System

Sometimes, the problem lies within the plumbing system itself. Misaligned or damaged pipes, sagging sewer lines, and poor pipe installation can all contribute to frequent blockages. These structural issues often require a professional plumber to diagnose and fix them.

5. Tree Root Intrusion

Tree roots are naturally drawn to the moisture and nutrients found in sewer lines. Over time, they can infiltrate and grow inside the pipes, causing serious blockages and even breaking the pipes.

6. Mineral Buildup

In areas with hard water, mineral deposits can accumulate inside the pipes over time. This buildup narrows the diameter of the pipes which makes it easier for blockages to occur. Water softeners and regular descaling treatments can help mitigate this problem.

7. Low-Flow Toilet Inefficiencies

Low-flow toilets are designed to conserve water, but older models can sometimes lack the necessary flushing power to clear waste effectively. This inefficiency can lead to frequent clogs.

8. Ageing Plumbing Systems

Older plumbing systems are more susceptible to blockages due to wear and tear over the years. Corrosion, rust, and deteriorating pipes can all contribute to reduced water flow and increased blockages.

Solutions for Stubborn Causes of Blocked Toilet

Now that we know what causes blocked toilets, it's crucial to handle the situation carefully to prevent causing additional damage. Take note of these effective solutions for successfully unblocking your toilets:

Use a Plunger

For minor blockages caused by excess toilet paper or organic matter, a plunger can often do the trick. Ensure there is enough water in the bowl to cover the rubber part of the plunger. Push down gently to expel air, then pull up sharply, repeating several times. If the water starts to drain, the blockage is likely dislodged.

Avoid Using Weak Supermarket Drain Chemicals

Supermarket drain chemicals are weak and don’t do much to help the situation. Save your money, they’re just not effective against more stubborn clogs caused by non-organic materials or deep-seated issues. Plumbers can administer stronger acids if need-be, however they have appropriate safety gear and are qualified to perform the task.

Call a Professional Plumber

While using a plunger and avoiding harsh chemicals are practical DIY steps for minor toilet blockages, they are not foolproof solutions. Trying to fix severe blockages on your own can lead to extensive damage. Calling a professional plumber is always the best option. A qualified plumber can provide expert advice, perform thorough inspections, and use specialised equipment to address even the most stubborn clogs effectively and safely.

When Holly in Warriewood on Sydney’s Northern Beaches engaged Eze-Flow to address ongoing drainage issues around her property, the backyard had been experiencing constant water pooling and flooding in the backyard during heavy rain. Holly initially described the issue as a “very wet portion of the backyard”, suspecting additional aggy lines may be required. With new paving planned, there were concerns that without proper drainage, heavy rainfall would result in water flowing back toward the house. It was clear the existing stormwater system was not coping and required upgrading before any surface works could proceed. The works were completed in two stages across November 2025 and March 2026, delivering a complete drainage solution across the property.

When a Primary School in Forestville began experiencing extensive stormwater blockages and localised flooding in May 2025, the issue was initially believed to be a simple blockage. Eze-Flow was called in to clear the stormwater system , however after attending site and beginning high-pressure water jetting to clear the multiple lines, it quickly became clear the problem was more complex. Grates were removed from multiple stormwater pits and heavy debris was manually cleared, including built-up soil, tree roots, and rubbish. One of the main pits was completely filled with compacted soil and roots, requiring excavation by hand before the outlet could be cleared. Using high-pressure jetting and CCTV drain inspections, we attempted to cleared both upstream and downstream. During this process, a significant amount of debris was removed, including food wrappers, chip packets, and multiple balls lodged throughout the pipeline. After approximately two hours of continuous jetting, two sections were identified as requiring excavation and repair. CCTV inspection confirmed a collapsed section of pipe, while another section was found to be obstructed by a foreign pipe that had been incorrectly installed into the stormwater line.
