My Hot Water System – Signs You Need to Call a Plumber

June 8, 2020

You may think that the first sign of a hot water system that needs some attention is when it suddenly leaves you out in the cold during a bath or shower. However, it’s highly likely that it was sending you signals long before that happened.

Hot water systems work quietly in the background; reliable, and steadfast in their ability to provide us with hot water on demand.

In a lot of cases, it’s only when people feel the chill of a hot water system on the blink that they deign to think of it all. As a plumber, I can tell you that calling me before your hot water supply dries up may help prevent catastrophic failure and extend the life of your system.

Now that we are well into winter, you could also avoid a night or two of cold showers. Here are a few things about your hot water system that will tell you it’s time to get me on the phone.

Watch out for Leaks

A hot water system that is leaking water may be at the end of its life, but there’s also a good chance that a service will find and fix the source of the leak, which is a lot cheaper than a new system.

Weak water pressure

If your supply of hot water is running out much quicker than usual, then a service or replacement may be necessary. It’s better to do it now, rather than wait until you have no hot water at all.

Lower water temperatures than usual

If the water out of your tap is still warm, but never quite reaches hot, then it’s possible there is a problem with the tempering valve. A faulty cross connection may also be letting cold water mix in with the hot water.

Spikes in your energy use

If you think your hot water system isn’t working as well as it should, don’t delay calling a plumber to take a look. It takes a lot of energy to heat hundreds of litres of water every day. If your system is faulty in any way, then you may start noticing it on your power bill.
